Information on USB Keys
SSL Key
The SSL key is the primary type of key issued by AutomaTech when a customer requests a hardware key for their license. SSL keys are shipped blank to the requester and must be licensed using Internet connected GE Common Licensing. These keys come in two colors: green (no longer available) and red (requires GE Common Licensing 18.2 or higher to be recognized by the system). Every SSL key has a unique numeric device ID.
M5 Key
The M5 key is a hardware license alternative to the SSL key. M5 keys are shipped fully programmed and any changes to the key must be requested to GE/AutomaTech and then a new key file will be generated. Generally, M5 keys are only distributed when there is a valid technical reason for requiring these types of keys. M5 keys may require special setup requirements in certain deployment situations. Every M5 key has a unique numeric device ID that may be required to be given in order to process a key upgrade.
M4 Key
This is a legacy USB type key. This key type can no longer be ordered or upgraded by GE. M4 keys are notable for being very small and come in a multitude of colors with white being the most prolific color.
Parallel Key (M1 Key)
This is a legacy parallel port (DB-25) type key. This key type can no longer be ordered or upgraded by GE. Parallel keys were designed to be input into large serial ports on older PCs that were also used to plug in printers; the printer connection could be added on top in parallel.
