Virtual Machine Install and Configuration Guidelines

VMware license needs to be purchased and readily available on install

  1. Should be the first thing you do after you install VMware and set up Vcenter

Configure datastores

  1. Understand how much storage you have on this server and set up VMs with enough storage to operate.

  2. “Thin Provisioned” is usually preferred because it takes up space only when needed.

Network adapter setup

  1. What networks are you working with?

  2. Setting up communications is key to RDP and other ways to connect to VMs.

Windows ISO

  1. Download the correct Windows ISO required for your project.

  2. Upload the ISO to one of your datastores in VMware.

Create a VM

  1. Walk through the process, select items that are specific for your environment.

Test VM

  1. Test one VM at a time, do not build a bunch of VMs not knowing if one will work.

  2. Change computer name now before you begin installing software.

  3. License the operating system.

  4. Set up security

  5. In the notes section of the VM in VMware, leave important details like IP address, Login information, etc.

Third Party software

  1. Do you have a backup mechanism for your VM?

  2. Products like Veeam will regularly back up your environment on a consistent schedule.
